One person is killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan; the building was also set on fire, according to authorities.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man from a nearby town, was shot dead by law enforcement after the attack, police say, without specifying any possible motive.
US President Donald Trump calls the shooting “horrendous” and says on his Truth Social platform it “appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
Local police chief William Renye tells reporters the suspect drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church and then began firing at people inside with an assault rifle.
He says the service was active with “hundreds of people within the church.”
Authorities believe the gunman also deliberately set fire to the church before he was killed by responding police officers, Renye says.
Ten gunshot victims were transported to hospital, including one who has died, the official says.
He adds that the fire has been extinguished but that “we do believe that we will find additional victims once we have that scene secure.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
