The court ruled in favor of the relatives of Simon Bauer, who staked their claim to “La Cueillette des Pois” (Picking Peas) after it turned up in a Paris exhibition, on loan from an American couple who said they bought it in good faith.

Bauer, a wealthy businessman with a sizable art collection in 1943, was dispossessed by the anti-Semitic wartime French government which collaborated with the Nazis.
