Man convicted of 1980 triple homicide suspected in death of Jerusalem caregiver

A Jerusalem man arrested after his caregiver was found dead earlier this month is named as Shimon Gutman, an 83-year-old who served time over four decades ago for a deadly mail bombing, Hebrew media reports.

Gutman is suspected in the death of Haviva Vashdi, 67, who was found dead at Gutman’s home last week after she went missing days earlier. According to reports, she was found stabbed to death.

Gutman was convicted of mailing an explosive to his mother-in-law in 1980 in revenge for what he claimed was his ruined marriage. The mother-in-law and two others were killed when she opened the package at a Givatayim post office. Gutman served 18 years in prison for the killings.
