Two key figures behind the recent renaming of New Hampshire’s Jew Pond will be recognized in June by the state’s Jewish Federation.
Rich Masters, a municipal official who formally requested the name change last fall, and Katelyn Dobbs, a local journalist who brought attention to the issue, will be honored at a June 10 meeting of the Jewish Federation of New Hampshire.
Originally called Spring Pond, the body of water, located near Mount Vernon, had become known as Jew Pond after an effort to turn the surrounding area into a resort for Jewish vacationers — a moniker that eventually became its official name. “I frankly find it to be inappropriate, disrespectful to some people, and I feel it needs to be changed,” Masters, Mont Vernon’s health officer, told the Associated Press in March.
The quarter-acre pool is now known as Carleton Pond. It briefly became the source of national attention earlier this year, even earning its own segment on “The Daily Show.”
