Man killed, seven hurt in three-car pile-up outside Nazareth

Accident occurs on section of highway 79 that has seen high numbers of deaths in recent years

A 50-year-old man was killed and seven others were injured in a three-car crash on highway 79 in the lower Galilee late Tuesday.

An 18-year-old woman is reported in serious condition, having suffered severe head trauma. Another woman, also 18, is moderately hurt, with bruises on her extremities and head, according to rescuers.

The collision took place near Tzippori Junction just northwest of Nazareth, on a section of the highway that has seen an unusual number of fatal accidents in the past.

Police sealed off the highway in both directions and traffic investigators were called to the scene.

According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, the two women were evacuated by helicopter to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

The remaining five injured were only lightly hurt, and are being treated at the English and Italian hospitals in Nazareth.
