Colel Chabad was established in 1788 and has operated without interruption ever since. As such, it is the oldest continuously operating tzedakah, or charity, network in Israel.

The raison d’etre of Colel Chabad remains unchanged since its founding – to provide meaningful material help, especially food, to the poorest Jews living in the Holy Land, and to do so without compromising their pride and dignity. Colel Chabad continues to help those in need regardless of their age, gender, background or degree of religious observance.

Colel Chabad works hand in glove with municipal governments throughout Israel who help identify and screen those who require assistance. Colel Chabad also works with the Israel Defense Forces, both repurposing and distributing army surplus food and serving as the rear echelon emergency food distribution system especially in times of war.

Colel Chabad is by far the largest charitable organization of its kind in Israel, and is proud that other organizations have recently begun to emulate its programs.

Colel Chabad is the only organization that takes a holistic approach to the needs of widows and orphans. Of course, food security comes first and foremost. But often it is not just, or not even, food that is the problem. Widows and orphaned children encounter enormous social barriers, issues with depression, poor schoolwork and a sense of isolation. For over 300 young widows and close to 1,000 orphaned children, Colel Chabad addresses all of these issues on a case by case basis.

Colel Chabad has made major strides in pioneering medical care for the poor and chronically ill. Nevertheless there is much more work to be done: additional clinics are needed, and existing facilities must be upgraded and expanded. The daily operating costs are prohibitive. Which is where you come in — an earmarked donation to our medical services is both life-giving and greatly appreciated.

From infancy to the marriage canopy, Colel Chabad is there for children from widowed and distressed families. Our growing network of daycare centers sets the standard for childcare. Our summer camps keep vulnerable kids off the streets. Our hospital programs bring the joy of holidays and the summer camp experience to the hospital ward. And our after school programs make the difference between despair and success for over 650 children in need.

Colel Chabad is never content to rest on its laurels. We are always on the lookout for gaps that need to be filled in the provision of social services to the needy — both needy individuals and needy communities. No other organization in Israel offers as broad and deep a grid of programs and projects to improve the quality of life in Israel by helping its neediest.

There is so much more we can do and we need your help to do it. Please click here and help support these many programs.
