Amit Soussana was released on November 30 as part of an extension of a temporary ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar and the United States between Hamas and Israel. This is the story of her capture:
Amit Soussana, 40, was home sick with a fever on October 7, when Hamas terrorists launched an assault on Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where she lives.
Soussana was texting with her family on WhatsApp, telling them about what she was hearing outside her window and on the kibbutz WhatsApp groups.
“There’s shooting,” she wrote, “they’re attacking the kibbutz.”
“Oh, Amit,” was one of the responses.
“They’re outside my window,” she wrote. “It’s scary, it doesn’t seem real.”
“Where’s the army?” wrote another family member.
Amit wrote that she was going to hide in a closet in her safe room, and then typed, “My battery is about to run out,” her last message to them, at 10:07 a.m.
Soussana, 40, a lawyer and graduate of Sapir College, lived alone in one of the apartments in Kibbutz Kfar Aza.
She was confirmed as a Hamas hostage on October 29, 22 days after being abducted on October 7.
