The teenager suspected of killing a Ramle man in the street on Sunday confessed to police that he fired the fatal shots, Ynet news reported on Thursday.
George Sa’ada, a 51-year-old father of five, was shot to death as he walked his dog, Ringo. The dog also died after suffering multiple gunshots.
Initial reports suggested that Sa’ada became embroiled in an argument with a gang of teenagers over the hostilities between Israel and Gaza, before one of the youths pulled out a gun and shot him.
Israel Radio said that despite the teenager’s confession, police believe that more than one person may have fired the shots and that the shots may have been fired from more than one gun.
The 15-year-old suspect told police that he believed Sa’ado was reaching for a weapon.
“I thought he was pulling something out of his pocket so I shot him three times,” the youth told investigators during a reenactment on Wednesday at the scene of the crime on Hazayit Street in Ramle.
Ynet reported that police discovered the teen was supposed to be under house arrest at the time of the incident following a brawl at his school. The boy said he was called to the scene of the attack by his friends, who telephoned to tell him that they were in the midst of an argument with Sa’ada.
“I think they said that he has a gun so I took along a gun that I found a few days earlier,” he said.
Although the suspect confessed to shooting Sa’ada, he denied having killed the dog, or any knowledge of how the canine died. After firing the shots, the boy said, he ran home. Police arrested six suspects and have been pressuring them to reveal the murderer.
Investigators have not yet found the gun used in the incident.
