Former Jerusalem Post editor Ari Rath dies at 92

Ari Rath, an Israeli-Austrian journalist who led the Jerusalem Post for 14 years, died Friday morning. He was 92.

Rath died in Vienna a week after celebrating his 92nd birthday, according to derstandard.at.

Born in Vienna in 1925, Rath was among the Jewish children who managed to escape the Holocaust through special transports to Palestine after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938. He joined the Jerusalem Post in 1957 and was editor from 1975 to 1989.

His support of dialogue to resolve past and present conflicts won him numerous honors, including Germany’s Order of Merit and Vienna’s Golden Award of Honor.

Rath counted former Israeli president Shimon Peres and assassinated prime minister Yitzhak Rabin among his friends.

He regained his Austrian citizenship in 2007 and spent his last years in Vienna.

He is expected to be buried in Israel early next week, Israel Radio reported.
