Two security officers were shot and injured when they attacked Border Police officers and tried to snatch their weapons at the Qalandiya Crossing between Israel and the West Bank, police say.
In a statement, police say the Border Police officers heading to the West Bank arrived at a gate designated for security forces only, passed through it, and waited for it to close.
A civilian vehicle arrived in the opposite direction, from the West Bank, and attempted to enter the gate area, the statement says.
Border Police officers approached the vehicle and several individuals exited the vehicle and attacked the troops while trying to snatch their weapons, police say.
One of the Border Police officers fired warning shots in the air, but the clash continued.
At the same time, police say an officer saw another officer being choked by a suspect and believed there to be a real danger to his life and those of his comrades, so opened fire at their lower body areas.
Police say that it only became clear that the civilian car was carrying security officers after the incident and that an investigation has been opened.
There is no update on the condition of the two individuals who were shot.

This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
