AG defends police recommendations to indict PM: ‘No one is above the law’

In his first public appearance since police published recommendations to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for bribery, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit rejects reports of a rift between state prosecutors and the police, defending the force and the work they did during the year-long investigations.

“These investigations were run according to the book, the way you would expect legal authorities to approach a case like this, determined to find the truth,” he tells a conference at Tel Aviv University.

“I hear efforts to suggest a rift between the different authorities,” he says of a report yesterday that state prosecutors believed the police did not have enough evidence for the charges they put forward.

“We have worked together with full cooperation to turn over every stone and to bring the truth to light,” he says. “I recommend being very skeptical about reports of rifts and tension between the various law enforcement bodies.”

Mandelblit also offered a veiled potential criticism of the prime minster who, responding to the recommendations, has accused the police of bias against him.

“No one is about the law and no one is immune from it,” he says emphatically.
