At General Assembly, UN chief bemoans ‘endless’ Israeli-Palestinian conflict

The United Nations kicks off its annual round of speeches by world leaders at the General Assembly, which Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opens by warning of waning trust “in the rules-based global order.”

“Universal values are being eroded, democratic values are under siege and the rule of law is being undermined,” he says.

By “managing competing interests” it is possible to avoid war, Guterres says, calling for the UN to be at the center of a “rules-based order.”

Turning to specific global issues, Guterres laments that “Palestinians and Israelis are still locked in endless conflict with the two-state solution more and more distant.”
