Belgium terror prosecutors take over Liege shooting case

Belgian prosecutors in charge of terrorism have taken over the case of a Liege shooting in which a gunman shot dead three people, two of them police officers, prosecutors say.

“There are elements that point in the direction that this is a terrorist act,” says Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutors office.

State broadcaster RTBF reported earlier the shooting happened near a cafe on the Boulevard d’Avroy in the eastern city of Liege. The gunman fled the scene, taking a cleaning woman hostage at a nearby school, but he was later “neutralized,” RTBF reported quoting police and fire services.

A video posted on Twitter by a person claiming to be a witness showed people running in the area. About six gunshots could be heard.
