Netanyahu hails Morales, says troops keeping Gazan protests down

At an event marking Guatemala’s transfer of its embassy to Jerusalem, Netanyahu tells Jimmy Morales “today you made history.” He adds he will travel to Guatemala soon.

Switching to Hebrew, Netanyahu says today saw relatively few clashes with Palestinians due to the good work of Israeli soldiers.

However, other Israeli officials have actually pointed to Egyptian pressure on Hamas as the reason protests on the Gaza border have fizzled in recent days.

Intelligence Minister Israel Katz told Israel Radio earlier in the day that an Egyptian intelligence chief warned Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh that the protests had to end or Israel would carry out assassinations and Cairo would not intervene.

He added that the intel officer told Haniyeh that Cairo has proof that Hamas was sending innocent people to act as human shields on the border.

He credited the conversation with Haniyeh calling off further demonstrations.
