Ultra-Orthodox protesters target Jerusalem cafe for 2nd Shabbat in a row; dozens of patrons line up in support

For the second Saturday in a row, ultra-Orthodox protesters clashed with patrons of a newly opened Jerusalem cafe for operating on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.

Footage shows ultra-Orthodox men shouting at and harassing customers of Cafe Basimta, some of whom shout back: “Enlist!”

Images from this morning showed dozens of people lined up at the cafe in support after it was similarly targeted by Haredi protesters last week.

Police officers arrived in the morning and have been stationed outside the cafe all day in anticipation of friction between patrons and protesters, according to Channel 12.

Sharing pictures of the line outside the cafe, Democrats party leader Yair Golan says he is “proud of the Jerusalemite public” for proving that “they won’t let extremists run all our lives.”

Israelis have a “right to sit with friends, drink coffee and live our lives without fear and without coercion,” Golan adds in a post on X.
