Five ultra-Orthodox school heads arrested for fraud

One of the men held is also accused of involvement in Internet extortion scandal

Five principals of ultra-Orthodox educational institutions were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of fabricating student registrations and defrauding the government out of millions of shekels.

The Jerusalem fraud squad raided several institutions in Jerusalem and the West Bank town of Beitar Illit and confiscated money allotted by the state for the scholarships of 1,500 fictitious students registered to study Torah.

Among the five arrested was a man also accused of extortion in connection to a popular ultra-Orthodox website, “Behadrei Haredim.”

Police also confiscated documents, computers and vehicles belonging to the principals of the schools.
