Faces of the Holocaust

The United Nations commemorates the Shoah with three new exhibits

Three exhibits on the Holocaust are opening this week at the United Nations in New York, each tied to the organization’s International Day of Commemoration on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The three displays, open to the public in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Center, share this year’s theme, “Children and the Holocaust.” The first, co-sponsored by the German mission to the U.N., is entitled “The Face of the Ghetto: Pictures Taken by Jewish Photographers in the Lodz Ghetto (Litzmannstadt Ghetto), 1940-1944,” and features photographs never previously showcased in the United States. A second, “A Monument of Good Deeds: Dreams and Hopes of Children during the Holocaust,” was put together by Yad Vashem, while the last presents 16 posters by graphic design students sharing the theme “Holocaust — Keeping the Memories Alive.”
