The incident happened on Olei Hagardom Street in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of the capital.

Emergency crews were unable to save the boy and declared him dead on the scene.

Ynet News reported that according to the police the boy came from the adjacent East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber. At about 11 a.m. the boy ran out from between parked cars just as a commercial vehicle drove past.

The driver slammed on the brakes but failed to stop in time and hit the youngster. Police said that the vehicle was not speeding at the time.

The boy had come to the area with two of his friends to collect empty bottles in order to redeem their recycling deposits. His two friends succeeded in crossing the road without incident.
