Umm al-Fahm mayor Samir Subhi Mahameed announces live on television he intends to resign over a Facebook post that mourned the deaths of two Islamic State-inspired terrorists who killed two police officers in Hadera on Sunday.

Mahameed tells the Kan public broadcaster he takes responsibility for the now-deleted post on the municipality’s Facebook page, but insists it was published in error.

The original post did not mention what the two terrorists had done, and is similar to other posts regarding the deaths of residents.

Earlier, Mahameed said the post — with his name at the bottom — was published by the managers of the city’s Facebook page and he was not aware of it going up.

“I take full responsibility,” he says. “I am announcing my resignation, I’m leaving the position with a lot of pain.”

He says he will notify the Interior Ministry of his decision.
