US says Israel-Lebanon talks ended early for the day due to ‘events on the ground’

A US State Department official confirms that talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome ended early today.

However, the official cites “events on the ground,” as opposed to leaks by the Lebanese delegation, which were the reason that Israel has given for the abruptly ended talks.

Israel has been carrying out strikes on southern Lebanon at a level not seen in several weeks following what it said was a ceasefire violation by Hezbollah.

The US State Department official tries to downplay the nature of the development, stressing that talks will reconvene tomorrow as planned.

“Discussions focused on a range of political and military issues and were extremely productive. The technical teams made progress on determining key details on implementation of the Trilateral Framework,” the State Department official claims.
