Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz for his role during “challenging” times and blamed Iran for trying to squeeze Israel Thursday.

“I would like to thank you for long years of service for the security of the country, especially during the past four years when you lead the IDF as chief of staff, four unusually challenging years, during a period of unprecedented regional unrest, when countries are collapsing and terror organizations, mostly backed by Iran, are filling in the vacuum, and Iran is trying to suffocate us with a multi-pronged vise grip,” the prime minister told Gantz in Tel Aviv.

Gantz is officially stepping down on Monday, when he will be replaced by Brig. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot after four years in service.

Netanyahu thanked Gantz for leading the IDF during two wars in Gaza — in 2012 and last summer — and hinted at secret military operations undertaken during his tenure.

“You led IDF actions, both publicly and clandestinely, professionally, determinedly and responsibly,” he said.

Netanyahu gave Gantz a copy of the book “The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu,” which is about the prime minister’s brother who died in the 1976 operation to free hostages in Uganda, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
