Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian teen and injured five others who clashed with them Sunday, Palestinian police said.

The violence began after Israel Defense Forces units entered the camp and were met by protesters who hurled rocks and explosive devices at the soldiers, an IDF spokeswoman said. The soldiers then opened fire.

Mohamed Abu Khalifa was killed and five others injured in the exchange, according to Palestinian media accounts.

His age was given in some accounts as 17 and some as 19.

“Faced with immediate danger, the soldiers fired at the main instigators of the violence,” the IDF spokeswoman told AFP.

None of the soldiers were hurt, she added.

According to the Hebrew-language Ynet news site, members of Abu Khalifa’s extended family, suspected of being members of the Hamas terror group, were arrested last week in raids by Israeli security forces.

During one of those arrest operations, an IDF soldier was lightly injured after an explosive was thrown at troops.
