EU’s Mogherini praises Abbas for calling for nonviolent protests

The EU’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini reassures Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that the 28-nation bloc does not support US President Donald Trump in his expected change in longstanding US policy by declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Mogherini tells the PA leader of the “firm position” of EU that the issue of Jerusalem should be determined in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, a statement from Mogherini’s office says.

The top EU diplomat also reiterates support for a two-state solution and welcomes the commitment by Abbas to call for nonviolent protests in the wake of Trump’s announcement.
