Hamas gunmen who opened fire on Israeli troops in Gaza City this morning, seriously wounding an officer, were killed in close-quarters combat, the IDF says.
The incident took place this morning at around 10 a.m. in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood when a cell of three operatives opened fire on a tank and troops of the 401st Armored Brigade with RPGs and sniper fire, according to an IDF probe.
A short while later, soldiers of the Givati Infantry Brigade’s Shaked Battalion, led by a company commander, launched a pursuit after the gunmen.
The three operatives were spotted meters away from the soldiers, and they exchanged fire. During the battle, the company commander was seriously wounded, and all three gunmen were killed.
The soldiers found RPGs and other weapons on the bodies of the operatives, according to the military.
Initially, the Givati officer was reported as moderately wounded, though his condition has since worsened.
