Tel Aviv’s bar scene, much like the city itself, is a testament to the strong sense of community that thrives within its streets. While the term “best kept secrets” or “hidden gems” might evoke notions of exclusivity, in the bustling White City, the concept takes on a unique twist. Tel Avivians embrace a culture of openness and collaboration, fostering an environment where hidden gems are not so much concealed as they are celebrated.
The city’s communal vibe encourages residents to enthusiastically share their discoveries, making the term “secret” almost paradoxical. As a result, these hidden treasures, from tucked-away bars to cozy cocktail lounges, become well-known not through whispers but through the joyful exchange of recommendations and the genuine desire to ensure that everyone can experience the very best their city has to offer.
Here are some of my favorite places — that WERE once “secret” for about five minutes, and are now beloved icons of the city:
Imperial Craft Cocktail Bar: Located in the heart of Tel Aviv, the Imperial is a cherished institution known for its meticulously crafted cocktails. The bartenders here are true artists, experimenting with unique ingredients and techniques to create drinks that are both visually stunning and delicious. This is a perfect spot for a date night. If you’re looking for a place for a group hang, just head across the lobby of the Imperial Hotel to La Otra, which has a spectacular Mexican vibe. Delicious food, marvelous drinks — try something with mezcal.
Getting there:
Teder.FM: More than just a bar, Teder is a cultural hub where music, art, and cocktails converge. This hip spot is known for its lively atmosphere, diverse music lineup, and innovative cocktails that capture the essence of Tel Aviv’s creative spirit. They have their own radio station and incredible Pizza, too. A great place to meet interesting Tel Avivan locals.
Getting there:
Spicehaus: If you’re jonesing for a speakeasy vibe, Spicehaus is the place to be. This hidden gem offers an impressive list of meticulously crafted cocktails blending East and West, each infused with a touch of Middle Eastern flair. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed evening – and if you’re someone like me that loves spices and aromatic fragrances, this is the place for you. BONUS: Spicehaus also bottles their special crafted cocktails – so you can take them back home with you to enjoy.
Getting there:
Beer Bazaar in Shuk HaCarmel (Carmel Market): If you want a nice, cold, crisp beer and you’re sick and tired of Goldstar, this is a must-visit destination for beer enthusiasts and curious explorers alike. With its upstairs deck offering an enchanting view (especially at sunset!), the venue provides a unique blend of vibrant market energy and a relaxing spot to enjoy craft beers. PROTIP: Order the flight menu and sample the best of Beer Bazaar (they brew their own – and I highly recommend their IPA!)
Getting there:
Port Said: While not solely a bar, Port Said is a popular restaurant with an impressive drinks menu. The bar focuses on fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations, making it a great spot for those who appreciate culinary-inspired cocktails. It’s also a terrific spot to hang out with a large group — it can get pretty loud, but in a joyful, exuberant Tel Avivian way.
Getting there:
Anyway, these are just a few examples of the outstanding bars that Tel Aviv has to offer. Whether you’re a connoisseur of classic cocktails or an adventurous drinker looking to explore new flavors, you’ll find a diverse range of options to satisfy your thirst for great beers and unique and expertly crafted drinks.
