An Israeli military officer froze to death while hiking in Chile, the Israel Defense Forces said Saturday.
Lt. Noam Rubenstein, 22, was backpacking in South America on a private trip when she died over the weekend.
She apparently broke her ankle while hiking through the mountainous Cerro Castillo National Reserve.
Her companion, another Israeli, left to get help, but when rescuers reached her several hours later, she was already dead.
