Living from siren to siren under Tel Aviv

Since June 13, 2025, with nightly missile barrages from Iran and not enough residential safe rooms, Israelis along the coast are seeking shelter in the depths of their cities

As Iranian ballistic missile barrages have become the new nightly normal across Israel since June 13, 2025, Israelis along the coast are seeking shelter in the depths of their cities.

From subway stations to underground parking garages, residents are transforming public spaces into improvised shelters — and unlikely communities.

The Times of Israel visited the parking garage under Tel Aviv’s landmark Dizengoff Center, where the Brothers and Sisters in Arms protest movement has repurposed its trademark gray tents to house neighborhood residents.

In Ramat Gan’s subterranean Bialik light rail station, we learn how 1,000 people take shelter nightly, with families turning their tiny corners into little apartments.
