A teenager attempting to rob a store in Beit Shemesh in central Israel made the fateful mistake of trying to enter the store through the chimney.
Firefighters called to the scene Thursday at BIG, Beit Shemesh’s largest commercial center, discovered the 17-year-old trapped inside the 3.5-meter-high (11-foot-high) shaft.
An accomplice, also 17, was also arrested. Though the accomplice joined his friend on the roof in their failed overnight robbery, he apparently was saved from his friend’s fate by virtue of the chimney already being blocked.
Police said the accomplice called rescuers after he was unable to free the trapped would-be thief for several hours.
The rescued youth was taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem with light injuries.
