Looking for an adventurous, adrenaline-fueled activity to do in the Negev desert?
Experience the exhilarating thrill of sandboarding amid the enchanting landscapes of the Israeli desert. Glide down towering dunes, surrounded by golden vistas that combine heart-pounding adventure with the beauty of the stark Negev wilderness.
Our tech reporter Ricky Ben-David shares: My family (husband + 2 school-aged kids) have stayed at Airbnbs in Retamim down south, about an hour past Beersheba, and have loved it every single time.
The houses are almost all rammed earth construction — an ancient method that has been revived recently as it’s a sustainable way to build. It’s also a religious kibbutz so it’s a total (lovely) vibe. There’s an amazing place to sandboard (like skateboarding only on soft desert sand!) and watch the sunset about 15 minutes away.
Plus — and this is the not-so-secret part — it’s close to the Ashalim solar power plant which is really cool to drive by on its own.
There’s also a wonderfully peaceful lookout point up on the hill, and it’s magic.
The only downside is that there are very few places to eat nearby.
