Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat inaugurated Umm Kulthum Street in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of East Jerusalem on Wednesday, part of a plan to name 145 streets in East Jerusalem neighborhoods this year.

According to a municipality press release, in the Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem a large percentage of streets have remained unnamed “for decades.” In addition to Beit Hanina, the city is working in conjunction with local residents to find suitable names for roads in Zur Baher, Shuafat, Issawiya, Abu Tor, A-Tur, Silwan and Ras El-Amud.

Legendary Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum (1898-1975) was the most widely regarded Arab singer of the 20th century. Israeli-Arab star Nissren Kader is to sing her most famous piece, “Enta Omri,” at the inauguration ceremony.
