A Tel Aviv portal to the State of Israel’s history

Ben Gurion House in the heart of Tel Aviv’s old north

Sarah Tuttle-Singer, The Times of Israel social media editor, is an LA expat (reluctantly) growing roots in Israel. She’s also a contributing editor at Kveller.com. Dangerous when bored.

I come from LA where everything is shiny and new, where a premium is placed on the next hot thing, and “historic” businesses boast that they were established in 1981 (the same year I was established *eyeroll*). But Israel has a different vibe — visit the Old City and you can touch ruins from 2000 years ago. Even Tel Aviv — a modern city — has portals to Israel’s older, storied history.

I’d like to tell you about one of these places: Ben Gurion House in the heart of Tel Aviv’s old north (right across from one of the coffee places — a charming kiosk on Ben Gurion and Ben Yehuda Street).

So, step right up and get ready for an extraordinary adventure that will transport you back in time to witness the magic of Israel’s founding father! Welcome to Ben Gurion House, a mesmerizing time machine that brings history to life in breathtaking detail.

The building itself is unassuming.  The sign is small, and it looks like so many other apartments in the area, humble, built for the heat… but the moment you step through the doors of Ben Gurion House, you’ll be whisked away into a bygone era. With its meticulously preserved artifacts, original furniture, cool tile flooring, not to mention the charming photographs, the museum is like a time capsule that invites you to relive the intimate moments of David Ben-Gurion’s life.

And if you like books, you’re in luck: The library is a thing of beauty and a great place to sit and read and even write.

What makes Ben Gurion House truly special is its ability to inspire visitors of all ages. For younger generations, it serves as a learning space, instilling a sense of pride in the nation’s history and heritage. On the other hand, older visitors may find themselves reminiscing about the pivotal moments they lived through during Israel’s early years as an independent state.

The first time I visited was with my son — he was eight at the time — and we were dazzled not only by the artifacts, but by the sense of time preserved, an aura of nostalgia. Even the light was different, as if the walls themselves echoed with the laughter, the arguments, and the profound discussions that once filled these rooms. You’ll find yourself walking alongside Ben-Gurion, witnessing the birth of a dream and the relentless pursuit of a homeland for the Jewish people.

My son said it’s as if you’re flipping through the pages of a living photo album, where each snapshot captures a different chapter of Ben-Gurion’s remarkable story, and you get to be part of it.

I told him by caring about Israel and engaging with the complexities of Israel, we ARE part of it. He liked that. We both do.
