Canada calls for protecting journalists after Israel bombs Al Jazeera, AP bureaus

Canada’s Foreign Minister Marc Garneau issues a statement calling for all parties to ensure journalists are protected after Israel bombed the Gaza building that housed the AP and Al Jazeera bureaus, claiming it was also being used by Hamas operatives.

“Canada continues to follow the situation in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza with grave concern,” says Garneau.

“We urge all parties to take immediate steps to end the violence, de-escalate tensions, protect all civilians, refugees, journalists and media workers.”

‘Canada reiterates the fundamental importance of protecting journalists and will always stand for media freedom. They are the cornerstone of any fair, strong, and vibrant society and must be free to do their work. Their safety and security must always be ensured.”
