White House press secretary Jen Psaki says the US has “communicated directly to the Israelis that ensuring the safety and security of journalists and independent media is a paramount responsibility.”

The tweet comes shortly after Israel bombed the Gaza building that housed the offices of AP and Al Jazeera, saying it was also being used by Hamas operatives.

The comments from the White House appear to be the closest thing to criticism from the US of Israeli actions in Gaza since the start of the latest round of violence.

US President Joe Biden has stated Israel has a right to defend itself against Hamas rocket fire.
