An Arab Israeli teen who was shot by a Border Police officer in northern Israel earlier has succumbed to his wounds.
The deceased, 18-year-old Ahmad Ashkar, was shot earlier this evening while fleeing law enforcement on his motorcycle in Kabul, a village in the Galilee.
In a statement, police say an officer shot at “a suspicious motorcyclist who did not heed officers’ calls to stop.”
Footage of the incident shows him crashing into a car parked on the road and being flung from his motorcycle, apparently after being shot.
One of the Border Police officers at the scene was then filmed throwing a stun grenade at a crowd that had gathered near the teenager as he bled out on the ground, before an ambulance arrived to collect him. Clashes then reportedly broke out.
National Security Itamar Ben Gvir praises the officer who shot Ashkar. “Those who endanger the lives of our police officers must be neutralized,” the far-right politician writes on X. “I bless the fighter who took action; he has full backing from me.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
