Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is threatening to “reexamine” the Camp David peace accords signed with Israel over three decades ago if the United States cuts its financial aid to Egypt.

American aid to Egypt is part of the Israeli-Egyptian peace accord, stated Muhammad Mursi, head of the Freedom and Justice party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood on Wednesday.

US-Egyptian relations have soured in recent weeks following the indictment of 19 Americans by the Egyptian prosecutor-general on charges of illicit funding of local NGOs earlier this month.

“The American administration’s insinuation of stopping aid is inappropriate and the [Camp David] accord will be reexamined and may be affected,” Mursi declared in a news statement. “We cannot discuss aid outside the context of the accord.”

He added, however, that continued peace with Israel is in the interest of the Egyptian people.
