Search and rescue teams have recovered the remains of Itamar Schlesinger, who went missing over two years ago following a car accident in northern Israel.
Police say the remains were found last Thursday in Ein Hod, just 600 meters (656 yards) from where his car was found after the car accident, in which he injured three pedestrians.
Schlesinger had been on a hiking trip on Mount Carmel in September 2023 at the time of his death. Authorities believe that he sped away in his car following the collision and ended up crashing into a gate leading into Ein Hod, his parents told Channel 13 last summer.
Police contacted his family the evening of his disappearance, notifying them that they had discovered his car overturned near the village’s entrance.
After Israeli authorities came up short, his family decided in March 2024 to enlist the help of a private firm.
Last week, teams with the Magnus Search and Rescue firm found human remains during a scan of the area. The findings were sent to the Abu Kabir forensic institute for DNA testing, and were matched with Schlesinger today, police say.
