Annan heads to Moscow and Beijing for talks on Syria
Russia and China have twice vetoed UN Security Council resolutions to criticize Assad’s regime
GENEVA (AP) — The United Nations says the joint UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan is headed to Russia and China for more talks aimed at peacefully resolving the crisis in Syria.
Annan’s spokesman Ahmad Fawzi says Annan will go to the capitals of both countries this weekend.
Western countries have pushed for UN Security Council action, but Russia and China have twice vetoed resolutions criticizing President Bashar Assad’s regime.
On Wednesday, the council issued a non-binding statement calling for a cease-fire and endorsing Annan’s six-point plan including diplomatic talks and a daily two-hour halt to fighting to provide aid.
Fawzi told reporters Friday that Annan’s team is “currently studying the Syrian responses carefully and negotiations with Damascus continue.”
