IDF hits Hezbollah command centers and finance body as rockets fly at northern Israel

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Tuesday that it had completed a wave of airstrikes targeting branches of a Hezbollah-linked financial institution across Lebanon, as it kept up the pressure on the Iran-backed terror group.

The IDF said several Hezbollah operatives were also killed by troops conducting ground operations inside Lebanon.

Hezbollah, for its part, kept up its fire on northern Israel, launching several barrages of dozens of rockets late Monday and early Tuesday morning, triggering sirens in the Galilee. There were no reports of injuries.

The strikes carried out by the Israeli Air Force hit various assets and vaults of Al-Qard al-Hasan, known to be used by Hezbollah as a quasi-bank, the IDF said. The military had warned the previous day that it would be targeting the institution.

In total, the IDF said, some 30 assets of the financial institution had been struck across Lebanon since open combat with Hezbollah resumed last week, after the terror group launched rockets at northern Israel, claiming it was doing so to retaliate for the killing of Iran’s late supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

Founded in 1983, AQAH describes itself as a charitable organization that provides loans to people according to Islamic principles that forbid interest. It has more than 30 branches across Lebanon, mainly in Hezbollah bastions such as Beirut’s southern suburbs, but also in central Beirut and other major cities.

Separately, the IDF said on Tuesday morning that it struck Hezbollah command centers and other infrastructure in the southern Lebanon town of Ansar overnight, after the terror group launched rockets at Israel from within the town.

After the rocket fire last night, the IDF issued an evacuation warning for residents of the town ahead of the strikes.

“The Hezbollah terror organization embeds terror infrastructure in civilian areas, thereby endangering the residents of Lebanon. The placement of launchers and firing from civilian areas in Lebanon constitutes a cynical exploitation of Lebanese residents to advance Hezbollah’s terror objectives,” the army said.

The military also said that within 10 minutes of one of the rocket barrages on northern Israel overnight, it struck and destroyed the Hezbollah launcher used in the attack.

Meanwhile, the military said troops of the 769th “Hiram” Regional Brigade identified a cell of Hezbollah gunmen and directed an airstrike against them.

It said separately that a group of “suspects who were near IDF troops and posed a threat” were targeted in another airstrike, directed by troops of the 91st “Galilee” Regional Division.

And in the Rab al-Thalathine area, where the 7th Armored Brigade, under the 36th Division, began a raid on Monday, the IDF said troops detected a group of operatives entering a building near the forces.

“Immediately after the detection, a tank fired at the terrorists and eliminated them,” the IDF said.

In another incident in the area, the IDF said it struck a building where commanders of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force had gathered, along with a weapons depot.

The military deployed troops deeper in southern Lebanon after Hezbollah began attacking Israel last week, saying it aims to “establish a forward defense that will create an additional security layer for the residents of the north.”

The IDF issued fresh evacuation warnings on Tuesday morning for buildings in the coastal Lebanese cities of Tyre and Sidon, ahead of planned airstrikes against Hezbollah infrastructures.

“The IDF will, in the near future, strike military infrastructure belonging to the Hezbollah terror organization,” said IDF spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee.

Civilians were instructed to distance themselves at least 300 meters (328 yards) from the buildings.

It also reiterated its warnings to civilians in all of southern Lebanon to evacuate north of the Litani River. It first issued the warning on Wednesday, and has repeated it several times since. Israel estimates that over 500,000 civilians have fled the area in that time.

“Hezbollah’s terror activities are forcing the IDF to act against it with force in the area,” said Adraee.

“Airstrikes are ongoing as the IDF operates with great force in the area. Therefore, for your safety, we once again urge you to evacuate your homes immediately and head north of the Litani River,” he added.

The UN said Tuesday that it estimated close to 700,000 people in Lebanon had left their homes since the renewal of hostilities last week, including more than 100,000 in the past day.

“Lives have been upended on a massive scale,” said Karolina Lindholm Billing, the representative in Lebanon of UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency.

In addition to the rockets and drones it has been incessantly firing at Israel, Hezbollah was also accused on Tuesday of launching artillery shells into Syria.

Syrian army officials said artillery shells fired from Lebanon landed near the town of Serghaya, west of Damascus, the state news agency SANA reported.

The Syrian army accused Hezbollah of targeting its positions, telling the news agency it observed Hezbollah reinforcements at the Syrian-Lebanese border.

“The Syrian Arab Army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syria,” the army said in a statement to SANA.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa spoke out in support of his Lebanese counterpart’s efforts against Hezbollah on Monday, after President Joseph Aoun accused the Shiite terror group of trying to “collapse” the state and proposed a four-point plan to disarm it and restore calm.

Prior to Hezbollah restarting rocket and missile fire on Israel last week, Lebanon had urged the terror group not to drag the country into a new conflict, a little over a year after the end of the previous round of fighting between Jerusalem and Hezbollah. The terror group had begun firing rockets at Israel on October 8, 2023, the day after the deadly Hamas-led massacre in southern Israel.

Israel regularly struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon following the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, accusing the terror group of ceasefire violations, and continued to hold on to five border posts inside Lebanon, citing security needs. It has now expanded beyond those points.
