Opposition leaders pan Lebanon truce: ‘A pattern is emerging in which ceasefires are imposed on us’

Opposition leaders are assailing the government for agreeing to a ceasefire in Lebanon while Hezbollah remains a threat.

“Not for the first time, all the promises of this government collapse in the face of reality,” says Opposition Leader Yair Lapid. “The confrontation in Lebanon can end in only one way — the permanent removal of the threat to the northern communities. With this government, that won’t happen. We’ll do it under the next government.”

Yisrael Beytenu chief Avigdor Liberman says: “The October 7 government has learned nothing. Once again, Hezbollah is being given time to recover and grow stronger. The war must not end without a clear victory and the elimination of Hezbollah. Otherwise, the next round is only a matter of time — at a heavier cost and under far worse conditions. In the next government, I will ensure the security of the residents of the north!”

Former IDF chief of staff and Yashar party chief Gadi Eisenkot says the ceasefire “is the result of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s inability to translate military achievements into political gains, and therefore a ceasefire is being imposed on us for the third time.

“A ceasefire should come from a position of strength, as an Israeli decision and from a position of power, in order to serve the negotiations. A pattern is emerging in which ceasefires are being imposed on us — in Gaza, in Iran, and now in Lebanon.”
