Hundreds of Palestinians are violently protesting in the Gaza Strip, close to the border with Israel.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces says the rioters hurled a number of explosive devices, and several attempted to infiltrate through the security barrier.

IDF forces detained a number of Palestinians in the area, and have handed them over to the Shin Bet security agency for questioning, the spokesperson adds.

The Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip says eight people have been wounded by Israeli fire amid the rioting.

It is unclear why the protests are being held.
