Trump: Hormuz has partially reopened, will fully reopen on Friday

US President Donald Trump says that the Strait of Hormuz has already “partially” reopened after a deal was signed with Iran yesterday.

Trump says the strait will be “completely open” on Friday — the day when the sides are set to hold a seemingly more symbolic signing ceremony.

Trump makes the comments to reporters at the top of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron while in Versailles for a G7 summit.

It is his first on-camera appearance since the Iran deal was signed. Trump speaks hoarsely due to an apparent cold.

He repeats that the US has “gotten along very well” with Iran’s “new set of leaders,” again claiming that he has enacted regime change, even though the regime is still intact.

Trump says “a lot of good things” are going to happen in the Strait of Hormuz and that gas prices have already started to fall.

He stresses that the most important dividend from the Sunday agreement is that Iran will not be able to obtain a nuclear weapon.

The deal is said to include a commitment from Iran not to obtain a nuclear weapon, but actual concessions on its nuclear program have been pushed off to subsequent negotiations.

Iran has long insisted it does not seek a nuclear weapon, and made such a commitment in the 2015 deal that Trump vilified and withdrew from in 2018. Both of Trump’s administrations, along with Israel, have refused thus far to take Tehran at its word — something the president is now suggesting he is prepared to do.

However, Trump clarifies that if Iran does not fall in line, “we’ll go back to where we started” — a reference to the US military campaign against Iran. He then reiterates that he does not think a return to war will be necessary.
