A Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli forces early Saturday in clashes during a raid near Jenin in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority health ministry said. Palestinian terror group Islamic Jihad said he was a member.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a later statement that Israeli troops opened fire in response to violence during operations in Kafr Dan.

Hebrew media reported that the teen was shot during exchanges of fire between soldiers and Palestinian gunmen.

“A 17-year-old boy was killed, and an 18-year-old was critically wounded by the Israeli occupation’s bullets during its aggression on Jenin,” a statement by the PA health ministry said.

The ministry identified the dead teen as Amjad al-Fayyed.

Photos circulated on social media appeared to show the teen wearing clothing associated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas terror groups, as well as the military wing of Fatah.

In a later statement, the IDF said suspects opened fire at troops, as well as throwing explosive devices and Molotov cocktails.

“During an IDF operation last night near Kafr Dan, a number of suspects threw Molotov cocktails, explosives and fired from a passing vehicle at [Israeli] forces. Troops fired at the suspects and a hit was identified. There are no Israeli casualties,” the statement read.

Jenin refugee camp has served as a flashpoint amid recent tensions following a wave of terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank in which 19 people have been killed. Numerous Palestinians have also been killed, mostly in clashes with Israeli forces.

Thirteen Palestinians were injured last week during an operation by Israeli forces in the camp in which Israeli commando, Sgt. Maj. Noam Raz, was killed.

One of the injured Palestinians, Daoud Zubeidi, the brother of notorious terror chief and Gilboa prison escapee Zakaria Zubeidi, later died of wounds he sustained during a gun battle with Israeli soldiers.

An Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, was killed earlier this month while covering another Israeli operation in the camp. It is not yet clear whether she was killed by Israeli or Palestinian gunfire. Palestinians have blamed Israel, and have refused to cooperate with an Israeli investigation into the incident.

As her funeral unfolded, Israeli police stormed the grounds of a Jerusalem hospital as the body of the slain journalist was being transported for burial, prompting an international outcry.
