German authorities search home of suspect in French SS memorial probe

German prosecutors say they have searched the home of a man suspected in a French investigation of a monument to a Nazi SS division in France.

The investigation centers on a memorial stone honoring the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division that was allegedly put up in January on private property near the eastern French village of Volmunster, easily visible to the public. French prosecutors are looking into suspected glorification of war crimes and crimes against humanity. French media reported that authorities quickly removed the memorial.

A German man who lives across the border in Puettlingen, identified only as K., was identified as the property’s owner. Saarbruecken prosecutors say K.’s apartment was searched Monday and evidence seized. German prosecutors must now decide what material can be handed over to France.
