The US ambassador to the United Nations says the UN Human Rights Council must “address its chronic anti-Israel bias” if it wants to maintain its credibility.
Nikki Haley delivers her highly-anticipated remarks to the council as it opens its three-week summer session in Geneva.
“It is essential that this council address its chronic anti-Israel bias if it is to have any credibility,” she says.
Haley decries the “rapidly deteriorating human rights situation” in Venezuela, and says Washington may withdraw from the UNHRC if it can’t address the problem.
Reiterating concerns voiced by officials of President Donald Trump’s administration about the effectiveness of the 47-member body, she says the US is “looking carefully at this council and our participation in it.”
Haley also urges that the council adopt “the strongest possible resolutions on the critical human rights situations in Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Belarus and Ukraine, and that it follow up to prevent further human rights violations and abuses in those countries.”
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
