Two men stabbed with screwdriver on NYC street in suspected antisemitic attack

Two men are stabbed on a New York City street, at least one of whom is visibly Jewish.

New York Assemblymember Micah Lasher, a Jewish representative of the area, is at the scene and says one of the victims was wearing a kippah.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin says the incident appears to be antisemitic, although there is not yet confirmation from police.

The incident takes place on the Tisha B’av holiday.

The Manhattan Shomrim neighborhood watch group says one of the victims was stabbed at 84th street and Central Park West, the second at 86th street and Amsterdam avenue, and that the perpetrator was apprehended several blocks north of the second attack.

The site of each stabbing is roped off with police tape, officers are at the scene and a police helicopter hovers overhead.

The NYPD says two males, aged 57 and 50, were stabbed in the torso and transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center in stable condition.

The police have a person of interest in custody.

One victim’s rabbi says he spoke to the victim, who was “pierced in his right chest,” heard screams and then “everything went blank for him.”

The victim is in stable condition, the rabbi tells The Times of ISrael.

“He’ll be home before Shabbos,” he says.
