Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu says he has no intention of firing the attorney general should he come back to power.
“No one is going to fire the attorney general. I have no intention of doing so,” Netanyahu says at a conference organized by the ultra-Orthodox newspaper Kikar HaShabbat.
His comments come a day after MK Nir Barkat, a senior member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, said that he believes the former premier, who is on trial for alleged corruption, will fire the attorney general appointed by the outgoing government if he wins the upcoming November election.
Barkat’s remarks — which echoed previous statements made in recent months by other party members — were denied hours later by the Likud party, which issued a statement saying Netanyahu has no plans to oust Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.
However, Netanyahu says he does believe the judicial system needs reform but said it needs to be done correctly, not with a bulldozer.
Netanyahu also appears to chide Barkat and other Likud lawmakers, saying that he was the one who would make important decisions.
“We have an excellent team, but the team has a captain and in the end, policy is made in an organized way,” Netanyahu says.
