Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana is working on a plan to liberalize conversions to Judaism, the Kan public broadcaster reports, following the rollout of his proposal to reform kosher supervision.

According to the report, which says work on the plan is well advanced, Kahane’s proposal would allow for conversions outside the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate.

“This is on the agenda. According to the coalition agreement, municipal rabbis will return to converting,” Kahana’s aide, Rabbi Shay Weissman, says in an interview with the broadcaster.
