Retired Supreme Court justice Yosef Elron joins High Court petitions against the controversial election as state comptroller of Michael Rabello, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long time personal lawyer and negotiator.
Elron was also a candidate for the position in the election by the Knesset, which took place on June 3.
After he won the first round of votes without an absolute majority, he was defeated in a highly contentious second vote when multiple Likud MKs videoed or photographed themselves voting for Rabello, after senior Likud officials reportedly instructed them to do so, despite the stipulation of the law that the vote be conducted by secret ballot.
Elron says he is joining the petitions regarding the “illegality of the second vote,” and joins the other petitioners in requesting that the High Court issue an interim order freezing Rabello’s appointment until a final decision on the issue by the court.
A hearing in the High Court is scheduled for this Thursday.
