When Marco Rubio attempted to wish his supporters a “gut Shabbos” (good Sabbath) last week ahead of the Iowa caucuses, it took a few tries to get it right.
While campaigning in the state, the Republican presidential hopeful was approached by a salesman offering kippahs with candidates’ names, Tablet Magazine reported. The man asked Rubio to wear a skullcap and record the Shabbat greeting, to which the candidate obliged.
“Say…’gut Shabbos’ Iowa to all the Jews in the country,” the man requested. Apparently slightly confused by the “gut” part, Rubio initially offered “boot?” before being corrected. See the amusing video below.
Rubio had a stronger-than-expected finish in the Iowa race, placing third behind Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, with 23 percent of the vote. That showing could help cement his status as the favorite of mainstream Republican voters who worry that Cruz and Trump are too caustic to win the November general election.

“We have taken the first step, but an important step, to winning the nomination,” Rubio said at a campaign rally in Des Moines.
We can't do this work alone.
The war with Iran has been draining for all of us in Israel. But when I heard about a high casualty incident – ballistic missile impacts in Arad and Dimona that left nearly 200 people wounded – I drank a cup of coffee, packed a bag, and headed south.
There, I spoke with Shilgit, the head of an after-school program for underprivileged youth. Standing outside her destroyed center, Shilgit said it was a miracle that no children were hurt and spoke about the community coming together in the hours since.
As a Times of Israel reporter, I’m committed to telling stories of resilience like Shilgit’s. But my colleagues and I can't do this alone.
