A dramatic video published Wednesday shows the moment that the mayor of a northern Galilee town shot and killed an assailant during a violent confrontation in a parking lot Monday.

Salman Amar, the head of the town of Julis, is accused of killing gardening contractor Monir Nibwani, 45, with whom he reportedly had an ongoing feud.

Amar claims he acted in self-defense and the video, apparently taken from a nearby security camera, shows Nibwani bash a car Amar is in with a club before Amar shoots him several times.

On Tuesday, Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court ordered Amar to be held in custody for a further eight days. Some details of the investigation have been placed under a gag order.

The video shows Amar parking his car in the lot adjacent to the council building while another car blocks him in. In the film Nibwani emerges from the second car, pulling a long wooden club or baseball bat from the trunk. Nibwani seems to threaten Amar as he is getting out of his car.

As Amar is shown scrambling back inside the car, the video shows Nibwani start to smash the windows and car with the bat.

Another man approaches to break up the fight. As he does so, Nibwani pulls open the car door and fires at Nibwani in the stomach.

As Nibwani is hunched over, the video appears to show Amar fire at least twice more at point blank range, including a shot to the head, before Nibwani drops to the ground.

This new footage has added fuel to the fire of an already tense situation in the Druze town.

On Monday, members of the two families involved in the feud agreed to a month-long truce, during which the male members of Amar’s family left the town. The truce was negotiated in the presence of local religious and political leaders.

The truce appeared to have been broken early Wednesday morning with an apparent arson attack on a communal building associated with Amar.

Sheikh Muwaffak Tarīf, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel and a former Julis politician, was involved in negotiating the truce.

The Nibwani family “is an honorable family. They lost a son in the Lebanon War. Together we have to overcome this. A long time ago we left behind the culture of blood revenge. I am convinced that we will get through this,” he told the Walla news site.
